The Way

The Way

Who are we becoming? All of us are becoming something through intentional or unintentional formation. All of us are invited to learn to practice and embody the countercultural, subversive way of Jesus that changes everything.

Practicing the Way of Jesus Work Sheet

Introduction

  • Who are we becoming?
  • David Brooks in The Road to Character writes, “Most of us have clearer strategies for how to achieve career success than we do for how to develop a profound character.”
  • Main Idea – Jesus is the way that we embody
  • We aren’t just human doings, but we are human beings.
  • Jesus is the Way
  • Bible Verses: John 14:1-7
  • “I am the way (John 14:6 – ὁδός hodos).” The word “the way” here is hodos. Same word that means the path or journey.
  • “The way of Jesus is just that: a way. Not just a set of ideas (theology) or list of do’s and don’ts (ethics), but a way of life based on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth.”
                  • John Mark Comer
  • Following the way of Jesus is more like a slow cooker then a microwave.
  • ….that we embody.
  • Bible Verses: John 14:12-14
  • The Spirit of God is the power source for the Christian life.

Conclusion

  • Understand the Process – We need a fundamental shift in how we think that the process and destination is Jesus which is a lifetime of following him and being in relationship with him. Practically – Set ongoing goals or habits that we want to grow in becoming like Jesus.
  • Practice the Way in Community –  We can do what Jesus and his disciples did but we need a fundamental shift in how we understand how we and others grow. Practically – Get with a group of people and actively practice what Jesus did together.
